A hurricane has killed at least two people in Florida as Isaias, the first storm of the Atlantic season, made landfall near Destin. The storm, which initially struck as a Category 2 hurricane, caused widespread damage and power outages across the Florida Panhandle and Alabama.
Local authorities confirmed that a woman died when a tree fell on her home in Florida’s panhandle. Another fatality was reported in Alabama, though the exact circumstances remain under investigation. The storm weakened rapidly after making landfall, but flash flooding and tornado threats continued to affect the region.
Isaias caused significant disruption, leaving over 664,000 customers without power in Florida and Alabama. Trees and power lines were downed in multiple areas, forcing emergency crews to work through the night. The National Hurricane Center warned that the storm’s remnants could bring additional rainfall and strong winds to the Southeast.
This is the first hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic season. Isaias formed in the Caribbean and tracked northward, intensifying before making landfall. The storm’s rapid weakening highlights the unpredictable nature of tropical systems.
The deaths underscore the dangers of severe weather, even as the storm’s strength diminished. Officials are assessing the full extent of the damage and preparing for potential secondary impacts from the storm’s lingering effects.
