A California woman has been arrested by US authorities on suspicion of spying for Chinese officials. The woman, identified as Wanying Zhang, also known as Heather, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Sunday. She is accused of sending photos and videos of the son of Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, and his family to Chinese officials.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) alleges that Zhang acted on behalf of Chinese authorities, providing sensitive information about the Taiwanese leader’s family. The arrest follows an investigation that reportedly uncovered her communications with Chinese intelligence operatives. Zhang is expected to face charges related to espionage and acting as a foreign agent.

This incident comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and China over Taiwan. The US has increasingly emphasized its support for Taiwan’s autonomy, while China continues to assert its claim over the island. Recent diplomatic moves, including President Trump’s engagement with Chinese leaders, have further complicated the geopolitical landscape. The arrest underscores the ongoing concerns about espionage and intelligence activities involving Chinese nationals operating within the US.
