The FBI has attributed the largest cryptocurrency heist in history to North Korean hackers, claiming they stole $6.3 billion from Binance in a matter of minutes. The agency identified the perpetrators as an entity known as TraderTraitor, the same group behind a $1.5 billion hack of Bybit last year.
Binance has pledged to cover 90% of the stolen funds, stating it has already reimbursed $6 billion of the total loss. The company confirmed the breach occurred within minutes, marking a record for speed and scale in cryptocurrency theft.
The FBI issued a warning to cryptocurrency exchanges and blockchain analytics firms, urging them to block transactions linked to the hackers. The agency emphasized that the attack was part of a broader pattern of malicious cyber activity targeting financial institutions.
This is not the first time North Korea has been implicated in major cyberattacks. The group TraderTraitor has previously been linked to high-profile hacks, including the 2022 Bybit breach. The FBI’s latest statement underscores growing concerns over state-sponsored cybercrime and its impact on global financial systems.
The incident highlights the vulnerabilities of cryptocurrency exchanges and the challenges of tracking and recovering stolen digital assets. As the investigation continues, the FBI’s focus remains on preventing similar attacks and holding perpetrators accountable.
